How does traditional apprenticeship differ from formal vocational education in Togo?

Traditional apprenticeship takes place mainly with an artisan, workshop, garage or company and combines practical work with complementary technical instruction. Formal vocational education uses approved centers or providers, structured curricula and qualifications assessed through national or recognized examinations.

What age and contract requirements apply to traditional apprenticeship in Togo?

The Labour Code requires a written apprenticeship contract, sets a minimum age of 15 years and limits the contract to four years except for alternance. Registration information has also referred to age 14 with a legal representative, so the applicable requirement should be confirmed with a Chambre de Métiers, CPM, CCOM or ETFP inspection service.

How long do apprenticeship pathways take in Togo?

A traditional CFA pathway commonly lasts about three years, while the Labour Code sets a maximum contract duration of four years except for alternance. BT programs commonly take two to three years, and CAP, CQP and FCD programs vary according to their qualification standards and providers.

Which qualifications and examinations can an apprenticeship lead to in Togo?

Depending on the pathway, apprenticeship can lead to CFA, CAP, BT, BP, BAC Pro or CQP qualifications. CFA assessment covers practical work, technology, legislation and hygiene, while other qualifications follow their own national examination requirements.

Q: How are fees and financial support handled for apprenticeship in Togo?

Tuition, tools, transport and workshop charges vary by provider, and no single current national fee table applies to all programs. The CFA examination service is free for Togolese citizens and costs 7,000 FCFA for foreign candidates; FNAFPP funding may be requested with a project and supporting documents but is not automatic.

Apprenticeship in Togo combines traditional workshop training, formal technical and vocational education, and expanding dual or alternance pathways. Traditional apprenticeship remains the most widespread practical pathway, while formal centers and short qualifications connect learning with recognized examinations and occupational entry. Access, duration, fees and available occupations vary by provider, region and pathway.

The formal system is known as Enseignement Technique et Formation Professionnelle (ETFP). It includes full-time study at a center, practical training with an enterprise, and alternance, in which enterprise practice is combined with theory and technology at a training center. Traditional apprenticeship usually takes place with an artisan, workshop, garage or company and adds complementary technical instruction. The dual model is being expanded under the legal framework of Law 2002-016 and the order of 12 April 2024 formalizing its implementation. Training is available in industrial occupations, services, agriculture, construction, mechanics, electricity, welding, carpentry, masonry, tailoring, coiffure, cuisine and other artisan trades. The local offer differs by region and center. Formal institutions include LETP, CRETFP, CET, CEAA and CFTP centers, as well as private ETFP providers. The ministry website lists 330 approved institutions, but a listed institution or program may not be operational every year. Private providers need authorization from the ministry responsible for technical education and must use validated curricula. Traditional apprenticeship commonly begins with a registered master listed in the Registre des métiers. The apprentice learns through assigned work and systematic instruction. The Labour Code requires a written apprenticeship contract in French and sets a minimum age of 15 years and a maximum duration of four years, except for alternance. The apprentice is not automatically treated as a worker under the Labour Code and does not receive an automatic entitlement to employment after completion. Information used for apprentice registration has also referred to a minimum age of 14 with a legal representative, so the applicable requirement should be verified with the relevant Chambre de Métiers, CPM, CCOM or ETFP inspection service. Admission to a formal center depends on the institution and qualification. The legal entry reference for some CET programs is niveau 5e, while programs connected with CFMI, INFA or comparable institutions may use a competitive examination. Traditional CFA pathways commonly take about three years. BT programs commonly take two to three years, while CAP, CQP and FCD programs follow their own qualification standards and provider schedules. CQP means Certificat de qualification professionnelle. FCD refers to short-duration training designed to provide an employment-oriented initial qualification. ANPE examples include a heavy-truck-driver CQP combined with a category E driving permit. The Certificat de fin d’apprentissage (CFA) is assessed through practical work, technology, legislation and hygiene. National examination arrangements also cover qualifications such as CAP, BT, BP, BAC Pro and CQP. In the 2025 CFA examination cycle, 51,743 candidates took part across 58 specialties, including 35,615 girls. An online CFA process was launched in 2025, with a target of issuing diplomas no later than six months after results. Completion can support occupational entry, artisan status or self-employment, but it does not guarantee a job. CIFA pathways can provide bridges to BAC Pro qualifications. Costs depend on the provider and pathway. Tuition, tools, transport and workshop charges do not follow a single current national fee table. The CFA examination service is free for Togolese citizens and costs 7,000 FCFA for foreign candidates. The FNAFPP may consider funding requests for formal-sector plans, artisan or informal collective projects, civil-society organizations, unions, administrations and dual apprentices. Applications require a plan or project and supporting documents, and funding is not automatic. Any allowance, payment or in-kind support depends on the employer, artisan or contract; there is no universal apprenticeship salary. Short-duration training and CQP programs can be useful where a full multi-year program is not feasible. Ordinary continuing education for already qualified workers belongs to a different category unless it directly provides a first vocational qualification. A 2025 decree addresses links between formal, non-formal and experience-based learning, including equivalence and validation of acquired experience. Access remains unequal between urban and rural areas and between regions, and industrial training continues to show a gender gap. The actual center, annual intake, examination calendar, fees and available occupation should therefore be checked locally.
