Markets and shops remain the main practical channels for groceries, clothing, household goods and technology. In January–July 2025, retail trade and auto repair reached 33.5 billion TJS, while food, clothing and mixed markets accounted for 14.6 billion TJS, or 43.6% of that turnover. Dushanbe and Sughd accounted for the largest regional shares in the available statistics. Non-state businesses generated 99.8% of wholesale and retail turnover in that period. Groceries include packaged food and fresh products. Check the expiry date, composition, weight or volume, calories, warnings, storage instructions, packaging condition, price and receipt. In January–August 2024, food and non-food retail each represented about half of recorded retail sales. Bread and bakery products, meat, vegetables and potatoes, sugar and confectionery, and vegetable oil were leading food categories. Building materials, vehicles and parts, fabrics, and power tools were leading non-food categories. Clothing is sold through markets, shops and online channels. Check the size, colour, condition and fabric before payment. An unused non-food product can generally be exchanged within 14 calendar days if its properties and appearance remain intact and the purchase can be proved. If the seller has no equivalent product, the consumer can request a refund. Government-listed exceptions apply. Technology such as smartphones, laptops and household appliances is available from shops, markets and marketplaces including Alif Shop. Keep the receipt, serial number or IMEI, warranty papers and service documents. Certain low-voltage equipment and other listed product classes may require technical regulation or certification. The seller remains responsible for providing the agreed product, price, warranty and safe-use information. Electronic commerce, or e-commerce, means buying through information and communication networks. Tajikistan has a legal framework for electronic transactions, and registered companies or individual entrepreneurs may sell through electronic offers, documents and contracts. Alif Shop offers products such as food, clothing, smartphones, laptops and appliances, with cash and installment options. Delivery areas, fees, timing, installment availability, warranties and return procedures vary by seller and platform, so check the final TJS price, legal seller, delivery terms, receipt and return procedure before paying. No uniform nationwide delivery system is evidenced. Cash remains widely used, while cards, electronic wallets, payment terminals and QR payments are also available. On 31 December 2024, Tajikistan recorded 8.4 million cards, 12.1 million electronic wallets, 11,955 electronic terminals and 19,918 trade and service QR codes. Google Pay launched in June 2024, and Alif supports Visa linkage and NFC or point-of-sale payments where the institution and terminal allow them. Confirm payment acceptance and keep proof of payment. The Law on Consumer Rights Protection, the Law on Electronic Commerce and the Law on Trade and Household Services form the main legal framework. The State Antimonopoly Body handles consumer-law control, Tajikstandard addresses trade rules, quality, safety, certification and metrology, local executive bodies may provide complaint assistance, and the National Bank of Tajikistan supervises payment-system and financial-service issues. A defect generally must be repaired within 14 calendar days. Replacement is immediate or takes up to 14 days for a quality check; if the model is unavailable, the period can reach one month. A price reduction, refund or damages claim generally has a seven-day period, while expert review can take up to 14 days. A delay can trigger a penalty of 1% of the product price per day under the applicable consumer rules. For a complaint, keep the receipt or order record, product packaging where relevant, warranty papers, serial number or IMEI and payment evidence. Start with the seller. Escalate consumer-law issues to the local executive consumer unit or State Antimonopoly Body, quality and safety issues to Tajikstandard or the competent regulator, and payment-provider problems to the National Bank. Court action is also available. Waste rules cover collection, storage, use, transport, treatment, disposal and recycling, but no nationwide consumer take-back network or verified eco-label system was identified. Durable, repairable goods, less packaging and lawful disposal are the practical options supported by the available framework.
Shopping in Tajikistan
Shopping in Tajikistan takes place mainly in markets, retail shops and a growing number of online marketplaces. Everyday purchases are priced in somoni (TJS), and sellers must provide product information in Tajik and Russian, a receipt, and required details about price, quality, safety, expiry or warranty. Consumer rules cover product choice, returns, repairs, replacements, refunds and complaints.
Tip
Choose the shopping channel according to the product and the protection you need. For markets and shops, inspect condition and information before paying; for online orders, verify the seller, total TJS price, delivery, warranty and return procedure in writing. Keep every receipt, order record and warranty document because they determine how easily you can enforce a claim.
