The National Bank of Tajikistan, usually called the NBT, is the central bank and supervises banking and payment activity, licenses banks and manages interbank settlement. The NBT register lists 19 banks, including traditional banks, Tawhidbank as an Islamic bank, state-owned Amonatbank and the Dushanbe branch of Tijorat Bank from Iran. The banking sector also includes microdeposit organizations, microcredit organizations, microloan funds and other credit financial institutions. Banks offer demand accounts, savings accounts, fixed-term deposits and bank-card accounts in somoni and foreign currencies. As of 30 June 2026, credit financial institutions held about 19.9 million bank accounts, including about 19.7 million belonging to individuals and 0.2 million belonging to legal entities. The number of accounts does not equal the number of customers because one customer may hold several accounts. Customers can usually access services through a branch, banking service center, ATM, bank payment agent, payment card, electronic wallet or mobile and internet banking. Agents can support identification, electronic-money services and cash transactions, which can extend access in remote areas. Regional availability differs, and not every digital service is available nationwide. Remittance providers may also allow domestic or international transfers without a bank account. The Korti Milli, Oson, ExpressPay and EASY PAY systems support domestic payments. International transfer and payment services include Western Union, Visa, Mastercard, Unistream, UnionPay, Zolotaya Korona, Astrasend, QUICKPAY, Sendy and BEST. In 2025, the country recorded about 136 million non-cash transactions worth TJS 42.4 billion, while cash withdrawals still represented 70.6% of recorded card activity. By the first half of 2026, electronic wallets had reached about 19.8 million, with 14.6 million transactions worth TJS 3.5994 billion. The Deposit and Savings Insurance Fund of Tajikistan, or DSIFT, protects eligible deposits at member institutions without a separate customer contract or fee. The current insured limit is TJS 35,000 per depositor at each credit institution, and accounts held by the same depositor at one institution are combined. Covered products include demand, savings, fixed-term and bank-card accounts. Metal accounts, safe-deposit boxes, bank certificates, electronic money, unidentified accounts, deposits of larger legal entities and deposits at Islamic financial institutions are excluded under the stated scheme rules. Foreign-currency compensation is paid in somoni using the NBT exchange rate on the date of the insured event, and accrued interest is not reimbursed. A claim is submitted through the designated agent bank, normally within one year, and payment may take up to 14 calendar days after the insured event. Fees, minimum balances, card charges, ATM costs, transfer fees and foreign-exchange margins depend on the bank, product and channel. The NBT's interbank tariffs are not the same as retail fees charged to customers, so the bank's current tariff and exchange-rate information should be checked for the specific service. Customers must provide accurate identity and transaction information and cooperate with customer identification and anti-money-laundering checks. Banks must protect customer information, maintain secure systems and handle complaints. A complaint normally starts with the bank. If the response does not resolve the issue, the customer can contact the NBT Consumer Rights Protection Division at allomushtari@nbt.tj or call the NBT hotline at +992 44 600-15-20 from Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00. The NBT has warned about fake loan offers, phishing and social engineering. Banks and the NBT do not request passwords, card security codes, PINs, one-time passwords or money through Telegram, WhatsApp or Facebook. Unauthorised transactions should be reported to the bank immediately so the relevant card or account access can be blocked.
Banks in Tajikistan
Banks in Tajikistan provide accounts, deposits, cards, money transfers, cash services and digital payments. The National Bank of Tajikistan supervises banks and payment systems, while banks and licensed financial providers deliver services through branches, ATMs, agents and digital channels. Access, fees, exchange rates and available products vary by institution and service channel.
Tip
Choose a bank in Tajikistan by matching its available services, location and security arrangements to your actual needs. Compare current tariffs, exchange-rate margins, deposit-protection status and access through branches, agents or digital channels before transferring money or opening an account. Treat electronic wallets, remittance services and bank accounts as different products with different protections and fees.
