Sweden has several routes for adults who want to continue learning. The right route depends on whether the goal is a formal qualification, a new occupation, stronger basic knowledge, language development or personal enrichment. There is no single continuing-education system for every need. Municipal adult education is called kommunal vuxenutbildning, usually shortened to komvux. It can provide basic and upper secondary subjects, Swedish for immigrants and vocational courses. Adults may use it to complete missing studies or meet entry requirements for further education. A folkhögskola, or folk high school, offers study in a more flexible and community-based setting. General courses can strengthen subjects needed for further study, while special courses focus on areas such as music, arts, social work or practical activities. Teaching often emphasises cooperation, discussion and the learner’s whole situation. Study associations are called studieförbund. They organise study circles, cultural activities, lectures and practical learning in groups. These activities are often suitable for people who want to learn with others without entering a long formal programme. Yrkeshögskolan, commonly called YH, provides vocational higher education linked to working life. Programmes usually combine structured study with workplace learning, often called LIA, which means lärande i arbete. YH is designed for practical occupational skills and may suit a career change. Other options include employer training, professional courses, language study and labour-market training. The provider, occupation and participant’s situation determine the content and conditions. Ask whether the result is a formal grade, a certificate, credits, a portfolio or only participation. Validation, called validering, means identifying and assessing knowledge gained through work, previous study or life experience. It can help a learner avoid repeating what they already know, but it does not automatically replace every required course or examination. The provider decides how prior learning is used. Good planning starts with a clear target and an honest skills check. Compare study time, entry requirements, workplace practice, support and the result at the end. Ask the municipality, employment service, education provider or employer which route matches your situation.
