Elections in South Sudan

South Sudan has a formal national electoral system, but it has not held a direct national election since independence in 2011. The National Elections Commission has announced 22 December 2026 for the next general election, while voter registration, financing and security preparations remain incomplete. Elections cover the presidency, legislatures, governors and several local offices.

Tip

Treat 22 December 2026 as the published election target, but keep checking NEC notices because registration dates, locations and several operating details were still unpublished. Your immediate priority is to verify eligibility, follow official registration information and avoid relying on informal claims about documents, fees or deadlines. If you plan to stand, campaign, observe or challenge a result, use the applicable NEC, PPC or court procedure and keep written evidence.
