Banks in Somalia

Banking in Somalia is provided by licensed institutions that accept deposits, operate current and savings accounts, and offer transfers, cards and related services. The Central Bank of Somalia (CBS) licenses and supervises banks outside Somaliland, while Somaliland uses a separate de facto regulator and licensing practice. Access depends on identity checks, and banks differ in account types, fees, channels and Islamic or conventional products. Mobile money and money-transfer businesses extend payment access but do not automatically provide bank accounts or deposit insurance.

Tip

Choose a licensed bank when you need an account, formal deposit services, cards or banking channels; choose mobile money or a money-transfer business when the immediate need is everyday transfers or remittances and a bank account is not required. Check the correct territorial regulator, NIRA National ID requirements, total charges and actual access to branches, agents, ATMs or digital channels. Do not treat mobile-money balances or ordinary bank deposits as covered by a confirmed blanket deposit guarantee.
