Professions in Slovakia

A profession in Slovakia is often called a povolanie, while a qualification is a kvalifikácia. The profession describes the type of work, and the qualification shows the knowledge, education, training, or experience needed to do it. Many occupations are not regulated by a special professional authority. Employers may then assess a person's education, experience, practical skills, language ability, and reliability. Regulated professions have additional requirements set by law or professional rules. Examples can include parts of health care, education, law, safety-sensitive work, and certain technical activities. A person with a qualification from another country may need recognition before working in a regulated profession in Slovakia. The responsible body and required documents depend on the occupation and the origin of the qualification. Vocational education is an important route into practical work. Stredná odborná škola, or vocational secondary school, can combine general education with technical knowledge and practical training. Some trades can be connected with živnosť, which is a trade or business authorization. This does not mean that every job in the same field has identical qualification requirements, because employee work and self-employment follow different arrangements. Professional development can happen through school, apprenticeship, employer training, courses, examinations, supervised practice, or learning on the job. A certificate is useful when it proves a skill that employers or authorities actually need. Choosing a profession should consider interest, ability, health, working conditions, demand, language, training time, and room to progress. A good first step is to study the real tasks of the occupation, not only its name.
