Higher education in Slovakia is commonly called vysokoškolské štúdium. Institutions include universities and other vysoká škola providers, with faculties that organise particular fields of study. The first degree is usually bakalár, often shortened to Bc. It gives a foundation in a subject and can lead to employment or continuation to a second degree. Second-degree study may lead to magister, abbreviated Mgr., or inžinier, abbreviated Ing., depending on the field. Some programmes use a longer integrated structure instead of a separate bachelor and second degree. Doctoral study leads to doktor-level qualifications and focuses more strongly on research, academic work, and an original project. It is not the normal first step after secondary school. Applicants generally need completed secondary education and the required school-leaving qualification. Faculties may use grades, entrance examinations, talent tests, interviews, or other criteria. Students can study in full-time or external forms, and programmes may be taught in Slovak or another language. The language of teaching affects reading, writing, examinations, and everyday contact with the faculty. A university year is organised into teaching periods, examinations, and academic administration. Students enrol in subjects, complete required work, collect credits where applicable, and finish the programme with its final examination or thesis requirements. Higher education can improve access to professions, deeper knowledge, research, and international opportunities. It also demands independent planning, academic writing, sustained effort, and careful checking of each faculty’s rules.
