Elections in Slovakia

Slovakia uses elections to choose members of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, the president, municipal and regional representatives, and representatives to the European Parliament. Each election has its own ballot, procedure, and responsible authority. Parliamentary elections choose the members of Slovakia's one-chamber parliament. They use proportional representation, so parties and political groups receive seats broadly according to their share of the vote, subject to the legal rules for that election. Presidential elections choose the head of state directly. If no candidate receives the required majority in the first round, the leading candidates may continue to a second round under the constitutional election rules. Municipal elections choose local representatives and mayors, while regional elections choose representatives and the head of a self-governing region. These elections concern services and decisions closer to daily life, such as local development, public spaces, and regional transport or education responsibilities. European Parliament elections choose Slovakia's representatives in the European Union's elected parliament. They involve a separate ballot and different political questions from national or municipal elections. Voting is normally done in person at an assigned polling place, with a secret ballot. Slovak citizens who meet the legal requirements can generally vote from the age of 18, but eligibility and voting arrangements can differ for particular elections. Before voting, a person should check the election type, polling information, accepted identification, and any lawful option for voting away from the usual place. The relevant election authority publishes the official practical instructions. On the ballot, voters select candidates or lists according to the election system. In proportional elections, voters may often express preferences within a list, while other elections may focus on individual candidates or a single office. After voting ends, ballots are counted and results are announced through the responsible public election bodies. Campaign claims, opinion polls, and unofficial reports are not the same as the certified result.
