Living in the Solomon Islands

The Solomon Islands lie in the southwestern Pacific east of Papua New Guinea and consist of numerous islands, where around 652,858 people live. Tropical rainforests, coral reefs, lagoons, and volcanic landscapes characterize the natural environment. The climate is warm year-round and mostly humid, with rainy seasons of varying intensity depending on the region. In Honiara on Guadalcanal, many people live in densely populated urban neighborhoods, while remote islands are characterized by small villages. Outside the centers, boats are important means of transport, supplemented by buses and few roads. Many people work in agriculture, fishing, trade, or public service. Community, church, markets, and shared celebrations play an important role in everyday life.
