Health in Solomon Islands

Health care in Solomon Islands combines public, church, private and nongovernmental services under national coordination by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and provincial health services. First contact is usually a nearby rural health clinic, area health centre, urban health centre or other health facility; clinical need determines referral to a provincial or general hospital and, when necessary, the National Referral Hospital in Honiara. Services cover prevention, diagnosis, treatment, maternity and child health, medicines, mental health and rehabilitation, but access varies with island location, transport, staffing, equipment and medicine supply. There is no verified nationwide fee-free rule or current nationwide tariff; transport, accommodation, waiting and referral time can form a major part of the practical burden.
