Politics in Sierra Leone

Politics in Sierra Leone combines constitutional government with elections through which citizens choose national and local representatives. The President leads the executive, Parliament makes laws and scrutinizes government, and independent courts apply the Constitution and other laws. Political administration extends through 16 districts, 22 Local Councils and 190 chiefdoms, while the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone administers elections under different rules for presidential, parliamentary and local contests.

Tip

Use Sierra Leone's political structure to identify who can decide an issue, who can scrutinize it and which election process can change representation. Classify the matter by level and institution before seeking action or interpreting a political result. Treat presidential, parliamentary, local council, referendum and village or town head elections as separate processes.

Elections

Elections in Sierra Leone allow eligible voters to choose the President, Members of Parliament and local representatives through procedures administered by the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL). The President is elected directly and needs at least 55% of valid votes; otherwise, the two leading candidates compete in a runoff within 14 days. Parliamentary, local council, referendum and separate village or town head elections follow different rules.
