Banks in Sierra Leone

Banking in Sierra Leone includes commercial banks, Community Banks, deposit-taking microfinance institutions, Financial Services Associations and regulated mobile money providers. The Bank of Sierra Leone licenses and supervises banks and oversees payment systems, while access is provided through branches, agents, ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, mobile money and digital banking. Cash remains widely used, but interoperable instant payments allow transfers between bank accounts and mobile wallets.

Tip

Choose a commercial or Community Bank when you need a bank account, deposit product, card or formal bank payment service. Choose mobile money or an agent when access, cash-in and cash-out or fast transfers matter, but do not assume that a wallet has the same deposit protection as a bank account. Compare fees, limits, access, identification requirements and complaint arrangements before depositing or transferring money.
