Safety in Sierra Leone

Safety in Sierra Leone involves both emergency hazards and crime risks. Floods are the most common natural hazard, while reported crime includes robbery, assault, domestic violence, fraud, sexual offences and cybercrime. A useful assessment combines local hazard exposure, crime information and the response structures available in the area.

Disasters

Sierra Leone faces frequent floods, landslides, coastal hazards, storms, lightning, drought, fires and other emergencies. Flooding is the most common natural hazard, while exposure is especially high on the Freetown Peninsula, in the Western Area and near coasts and rivers. The National Disaster Management Agency coordinates warnings, emergency response, evacuation and recovery with regional, district and chiefdom structures.

Crime

Crime in Sierra Leone includes offences such as robbery, housebreaking, assault, murder, fraud, domestic violence, sexual offences, child abuse, human trafficking, cybercrime and drug offences. The Sierra Leone Police recorded 30,491 criminal and accident cases in 2023, but reported cases do not measure all crime. Recorded cases were much higher in the Western Area, which accounted for 62% of the total.
