Saint Lucia's natural landscape ranges from lower montane rainforest and cloud forest to dry scrub, secondary woodland, wetlands and coastal ecosystems. Forests protect watersheds, reduce soil loss and support water security. Mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reefs provide nursery habitat for marine life, reduce coastal erosion and help communities withstand waves and storms. Their condition is affected by hurricanes, storm surge, sea-level rise, drought, flooding, landslides, wildfire, warming seas, ocean acidification, coral bleaching and sargassum influx. Nature-based protection does not replace the separate emergency systems used for disasters. The Pitons Management Area, or PMA, covers about 2,909 hectares and includes Gros Piton, Petit Piton, volcanic and geothermal features around Sulphur Springs, and terrestrial and marine zones.
