Pets in Saint Lucia

Pet ownership in Saint Lucia commonly involves dogs and cats, as well as birds, rabbits, hamsters, turtles, tortoises, ornamental fish, mice, rats, gerbils and chinchillas. All live animals entering Saint Lucia require an import permit, although the health conditions differ by species. Wildlife and exotic species may require a Forestry Division permit under the Wildlife Protection Act and do not follow the ordinary household-pet pathway. Dogs aged three months or more require an annual dog licence in Soufriere, Vieux Fort, Choiseul, Laborie, Micoud, Dennery, Gros Islet, Anse-la-Raye and Canaries. The licence is obtained from the local Sub-Collector of Taxes by 31 January, and a new owner must apply within seven days.
