Safety in Rwanda

Safety in Rwanda covers both disasters and crime. Disaster risks include floods, landslides, storms, drought, earthquakes, fires and volcanic hazards, while crime risks include theft, violence, fraud, abuse and digital crime. The appropriate response depends on whether the danger comes from an environmental event or from a person or organization.

Disasters

Disasters in Rwanda include floods, landslides, strong winds, thunderstorms, hailstorms, drought, earthquakes, volcanic hazards, fires and explosions. Rwanda coordinates disaster risk management through MINEMA, district and sector authorities, emergency services and community teams. Floods, landslides, heavy rain and lightning create particularly high practical risks, while drought is especially relevant in the Eastern Province.

Crime

Crime in Rwanda includes theft, assault, fraud, drug-related offences, gender-based violence, child abuse and digital crime. Rwanda uses national police, investigation, cyber-response, legal-aid and victim-support services, with emergency and reporting channels matched to the situation. Official figures count reported or investigated cases, so a decline in recorded crime does not mean that every individual faces no risk.
