History in Rwanda

Rwanda's history extends from early Iron Age societies and the growth of the Nyiginya monarchy to colonial rule, independence, the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and post-1994 reconstruction. Archaeology, oral traditions, royal genealogies, archives, court records, survivor testimonies and memorial sites provide different kinds of evidence that must be compared critically. Colonial administration hardened previously overlapping social categories, while political exclusion, refugee movements, civil war and organized extremist violence shaped the modern period. Museums, archives, schools and memorial institutions preserve and interpret this history in Rwanda.
