The Republic of the Congo has an established tertiary education system with public and private institutions. The main public universities are Université Marien Ngouabi (UMNG) in Brazzaville and Université Denis Sassou N’Guesso (UDSN) in Kintélé near Brazzaville. Available fields include law, management, humanities, sciences, economics, education, health, engineering, agriculture, forestry, administration and magistracy. UDSN also focuses on applied sciences, geography, environment, planning, architecture, urban planning, construction, mining, hydraulics and energy. LMD means Licence, Master and Doctorat. A Licence normally corresponds to Bac+3, a Master to Bac+5 and a Doctorat to Bac+8. The system uses coursework, personal academic work and assessments, while some programmes also include practical placements or links with companies. A Licence can lead to a Master, and a Master can lead to a Doctorat; internal transfers and CEMAC mobility can provide additional pathways where the institution and programme allow them. UMNG uses admission based on academic records for some faculties, including FLASH, FST, FSE and FD, and entrance examinations for areas such as health, teacher education, engineering, agriculture, public administration and sports. Applicants commonly prepare a birth-record extract, criminal-record certificate, nationality certificate, legalised baccalauréat certificate and transcript, medical certificate and four passport photographs. The exact documents, selection method and annual dates depend on the institution and programme. UDSN’s 2026–2027 Licence notice provides admission through an entrance examination or selection and states a maximum applicant age of 22 on 31 December 2026. Students normally complete a pre-registration or application, receive admission, enrol with the institution and provide proof of fee payment before their academic status becomes active. UMNG distinguishes fees for Congolese nationals, CEMAC nationals and foreign students from outside CEMAC, but current amounts were not verified; UDSN’s current amounts were also not verified. Housing, food and transport require a separate budget. Congolese students can apply through the Ministère’s E-Bourse service for scholarship or aid procedures, renewals, online status checks, bank registration and identity or baccalauréat data matching; current amounts, quotas and eligibility conditions require confirmation in the applicable notice. The institution’s internal rules govern attendance, examinations, enrolment and academic conduct. National oversight comes from the Ministère de l’Enseignement Supérieur, while CAMES processes may support recognition or equivalence. The LMD label alone does not guarantee automatic international equivalence. Before paying a private institution, check its official authorisation, programme approval and diploma status. Academic campaigns and entrance examinations generally follow annual calendars, so the relevant university or faculty notice should be checked directly for the current intake.
Study in Congo Republic
Tertiary study in the Republic of the Congo takes place in a formal university system supervised by the Ministère de l’Enseignement Supérieur. The LMD system leads from Licence, usually Bac+3, to Master, usually Bac+5, and Doctorat, usually Bac+8. Public options include Université Marien Ngouabi in Brazzaville and Université Denis Sassou N’Guesso in Kintélé. Admission, fees, scholarships and diploma recognition depend on the university and programme.
Tip
Treat the university and programme choice as the first filter, because admission route, documents, age limits, fees and available places differ by institution. Compare UMNG and UDSN against the intended field, then confirm the current notice before submitting anything or paying fees. Keep a separate budget for study costs, housing, food and transport.
