Large malls are common in Qatar and combine shops, restaurants, services, and entertainment in one air-conditioned place. They are useful for clothing, electronics, household goods, and branded products. Supermarkets provide everyday food, cleaning products, toiletries, and imported goods. Smaller groceries, often called baqalas, can be convenient for quick purchases near homes and workplaces. Traditional markets, especially souqs, are important places for spices, perfumes, fabrics, gold, gifts, and local-style goods. Souq Waqif is a well-known example of a traditional market area in Doha. Bargaining may be accepted in some independent shops and market stalls, especially for souvenirs or several items. It is less common in fixed-price supermarkets and large chain stores. Qatari riyals are the local currency. Cards and electronic payments are widely used, while cash remains useful in small shops, markets, and for small services. Check the price, size, quantity, warranty, and return conditions before paying. Keep the receipt because shop policies can differ and some products may not be returnable. Imported goods can cost more than expected, and product availability may change. Compare prices across a supermarket, a local shop, and a mall when the purchase is important. Shopping is also a social activity in Qatar. Dress modestly, respect prayer times and local customs, and ask politely before photographing people, stalls, or private areas.
