Languages in Portugal

The main language of Portugal is Portuguese, called português or língua portuguesa. It is used in schools, public administration, most services, and national media. Portuguese in Portugal has its own pronunciation, vocabulary, and everyday expressions. Learners who know Brazilian Portuguese can usually communicate, but they may notice differences in accent, words, spelling conventions, and formal usage. Mirandese, called mirandês, is spoken mainly in the Miranda do Douro area. It has recognised cultural and regional importance and may appear in local education or community life. Many families in Portugal use another language at home. Common home languages can include languages from Portuguese-speaking countries, Europe, Africa, Asia, and other parts of the world. English is widely learned as a foreign language, especially in education, tourism, technology, and international business. Other foreign languages may be taught according to the school, course, or personal need. Language ability has several parts, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. A person may understand everyday Portuguese while still needing help with official letters, school language, or professional vocabulary. Portuguese is important for dealing independently with doctors, schools, offices, landlords, and employers. At the same time, home languages are valuable for family relationships, identity, culture, and communication across borders.
