Apprenticeship in Portugal

In Portugal, apprenticeship is part of vocational education and training rather than one single occupation-based system. The Portuguese terms aprendizagem and formação profissional are commonly used for this area. Aprendizagem courses combine lessons with practical training in a workplace or training setting. They are designed mainly for young people who want a recognized qualification and early contact with working life. Professional courses, called cursos profissionais, are another important route. They are commonly offered in secondary education and combine general subjects, technical subjects, and practical training. Workplace practice is usually an important part of the programme. Learners develop technical skills, learn workplace rules, and practise cooperation, safety, communication, and problem solving. Training may be provided through schools, vocational centres, employers, or public employment and training services such as the Instituto do Emprego e Formação Profissional, known as IEFP. The exact organisation depends on the course and the learner’s situation. Successful completion can lead to a school qualification, a professional qualification, or both. Some routes also allow progression to further vocational education or higher education when the entry conditions are met. Apprenticeship can make the transition into work easier because learners gain experience and meet employers. Its limits include a narrower subject choice than general education and the need to check whether a qualification is accepted for a particular job or further study. A first step is to identify the desired occupation, compare recognised training routes, and ask the provider how practical training, assessment, certification, and progression are organised. Learners should also check the language level, travel needs, timetable, and support available before enrolling.
