Politics in Poland

Politics in Poland concerns how public power is organized, exercised and contested. Poland is a democratic republic and a unitary state, so national institutions set countrywide rules while local authorities manage many local and regional matters. Elections give citizens a way to choose representatives at national, local and European level.

State

The state in Poland is a democratic republic called Rzeczpospolita Polska, or the Republic of Poland. Power is shared between elected bodies, the government, courts, and local authorities. Poland is a unitary state, so national law applies across the country while gminas, powiats, and voivodeships manage many local matters.

Elections

Elections in Poland are called wybory and allow citizens to choose national, local, and European representatives. Poland uses different voting systems depending on whether people elect the Sejm, Senat, President, local councils, or members of the European Parliament. The ballot is personal and secret, and eligible citizens normally vote from the age of 18.
