Disasters in Peru

Peru is exposed to several natural hazards because it has an active Pacific coast, the Andes, high mountain areas, and tropical regions. The most important hazards differ by place, so coastal, mountain, and rainforest communities may prepare for different events. Earthquakes, called sismos, can happen throughout Peru. A strong coastal earthquake may also create a tsunami, while mountain earthquakes can trigger landslides and falling rocks. A huaico is a fast flow of mud, stones, and water down a narrow valley or ravine. Heavy rain can also cause river floods, urban flooding, and landslides, especially where homes or roads are built near waterways and unstable slopes. Peru also faces volcanic activity in parts of the Andes, droughts, frost, cold conditions, heat, strong winds, and forest fires. El Niño-related changes can increase rain and flooding in some areas and reduce water availability in others. Disaster management is organized through SINAGERD, the National System for Disaster Risk Management. INDECI supports preparedness, emergency response, coordination, and public information, while regional and municipal authorities and local Defensa Civil teams have important responsibilities. The system covers more than emergency rescue. It includes identifying risks, reducing exposure, preparing people and institutions, responding to an event, rehabilitating essential services, and rebuilding more safely. Warnings may come through authorities, emergency services, local officials, radio, mobile alerts, or community communication. A warning is useful only when people know what action it requires and where to go. Preparedness has limits because a hazard cannot always be predicted precisely and infrastructure may be weak. A household plan, safer building choices, emergency supplies, and calm cooperation with official instructions remain the basic protections.
