Language in Pakistan

Pakistan is multilingual, and people often use different languages at home, in school, at work, and with public offices. Urdu is the national language and a major link language, while English is important in higher education, law, administration, and professional life. Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, Balochi, Saraiki, Hindko, Brahui, Shina, Balti, and many other languages express local identity and daily life.

Tip

The best first step in Pakistan is to ask which language a person prefers in that situation. Learn a few polite words in the local language, but use a trusted speaker or interpreter for important information. Multilingual ability is a practical strength and a cultural resource.
