Pets in Nigeria

Dogs and cats are common companion animals in Nigeria, and some households also keep birds, fish, rabbits, or other animals. In rural areas, animals may also support farming, security, transport, or food production. A pet needs safe shelter, clean water, suitable food, exercise, rest, and regular observation. Heat, rain, traffic, parasites, and poor waste management can create special risks. Veterinary clinics and animal health workers provide examinations, vaccinations, parasite control, treatment, sterilisation, and advice. Availability may be better in cities than in smaller communities. Keep vaccination and treatment records, especially for dogs and cats. Ask a veterinarian which vaccinations, worm control, tick control, and other care are suitable for the animal and its location. Pets should not roam freely on busy roads or disturb neighbours. Use a secure compound, leash, carrier, or other safe control method as appropriate. Feed animals food that is suitable for their species and provide fresh water. Do not assume that leftovers, bones, medicines, or human foods are safe for every pet. Animal bites and scratches should be taken seriously. Separate the animal safely, clean the wound promptly, and seek medical advice about the person and veterinary advice about the animal. Before getting a pet, consider daily care, housing permission, travel, costs, illness, breeding, and what will happen if you move. Responsible ownership includes preventing unwanted litters and arranging care when you are away.
