Apprenticeship in Nigeria

Apprenticeship in Nigeria is usually practical training at a workplace rather than a single national school programme. The learner joins an experienced person, often called a master, and learns by watching, assisting, and gradually doing more difficult work. Common areas include vehicle repair, tailoring, hairdressing, welding, carpentry, electronics, catering, trading, farming, and other small businesses. Training may take place in a shop, workshop, market, household business, or community setting. In south-eastern Nigeria, the term Igba boy is widely associated with a form of business apprenticeship in which a young person serves with an established trader or entrepreneur. Similar informal arrangements exist in other regions under different local names and customs. The usual process begins with an introduction through family, friends, a community group, or a business association. The learner and the master may discuss the length of service, duties, living arrangements, learning goals, support, and whether the learner will later receive help to start a business. At first, the learner often cleans, carries materials, observes customers, and performs simple tasks. With practice, the learner may handle tools, prepare products, keep records, serve customers, or complete work under supervision. Some apprenticeships are unpaid or include food, housing, transport help, or a later settlement arrangement. Others involve payment or a short course fee. Because agreements are not always written, misunderstandings can arise about duties, safety, personal freedom, and the final support promised. The main strength is that learning happens in a real working environment. The learner can gain technical ability, customer skills, discipline, local knowledge, and a network of people who may help with future work. The main limits are uneven teaching, weak protection for learners, unsafe conditions, long working hours, and skills that may not be formally certified. A careful learner should compare the master, workplace, safety standards, and learning plan before agreeing.
