Elections in Nigeria

Nigeria is a representative democracy with elections held under the Constitution and election laws. Citizens choose people to make decisions for them at national, state, and local levels. The Independent National Electoral Commission, usually called INEC, organizes federal elections and many state elections. It manages voter registration, candidate processes, polling arrangements, counting, and the declaration of results within its legal powers. At the federal level, voters elect the President, members of the Senate, and members of the House of Representatives. At the state level, voters elect a governor and members of the State House of Assembly. Local government elections are generally organized by State Independent Electoral Commissions, often known as SIECs. Their organization and public visibility can differ from federal and state elections. Nigeria mainly uses constituency elections in which the candidate with the required highest support wins a seat. Presidential and gubernatorial elections also include constitutional requirements beyond simply receiving the most votes, including geographic spread requirements. A typical election process begins with voter registration and the preparation of the voter register. Political parties select candidates, campaigns present competing messages, polling takes place, votes are counted, and results can be challenged through the legal process. Common terms include polling unit, ward, constituency, political party, voter register, returning officer, accreditation, ballot, and collation. A polling unit is the local place where voters cast their ballots, while collation combines results from several polling units. Elections give citizens a peaceful way to change leaders and influence public priorities. Their limits include unequal campaign resources, misinformation, intimidation, logistical problems, low trust, and disputes about results. A responsible voter checks registration information through official channels, studies candidates and party programmes, protects the secrecy of the ballot, and reports problems safely through lawful election complaint channels.
