Art in Nigeria

Nigerian art is made for many purposes. It can show beauty, honor ancestors, teach values, mark status, support worship, record history, decorate a home, earn income, or question public life. Well-known historical traditions include Nok terracotta, Ife naturalistic sculpture, Benin court art, Yoruba wood carving, Igbo-Ukwu metalwork, and many regional forms of pottery, weaving, beadwork, masks, and architecture. Textiles are especially important in daily and ceremonial life. Adire indigo cloth, aso oke, akwete weaving, Ankara fabrics, embroidery, and locally made garments can express identity, occasion, wealth, creativity, and belonging. Art may be connected with festivals, masquerades, royal courts, shrines, funerals, weddings, markets, and public celebrations. In these settings, an object or performance may have a social or spiritual role beyond decoration. Modern Nigerian art includes studio painting, sculpture, photography, fashion, illustration, design, film, music video, theatre, and digital media. Artists often combine Nigerian materials and symbols with global styles and new technologies. Museums, galleries, universities, craft markets, cultural centers, festivals, workshops, churches, mosques, palaces, and community spaces all help art reach people. Many artists also work independently or sell directly through networks. The history of Nigerian art includes the removal, sale, and disputed ownership of cultural objects. Questions of consent, community authority, conservation, restitution, and respectful display remain important. To understand an artwork, look at its materials, maker, community, use, setting, audience, and story. Do not assume that one object represents all of Nigeria or that every ritual object is available for ordinary viewing or sale.
