Most international visitors enter Nigeria through an airport, while people also arrive by road from nearby countries. Your first steps usually include immigration, baggage collection, customs, transport, and meeting a host or finding accommodation. Keep your passport, travel papers, address, and important phone numbers easy to reach. Immigration officers may ask about your purpose of travel, where you will stay, and how long you plan to remain. After customs, use transport that you or a trusted local person have arranged. In large cities, traffic can make a short distance take a long time, so allow extra time and confirm the exact address before leaving. Nigeria uses the naira, written as NGN or ₦. Carry a small amount of cash for simple expenses, but keep money and documents secure and avoid displaying large amounts in public. A Nigerian phone line and mobile data are useful for calls, maps, messages, and digital payments. Ask a trusted person to help you understand local networks and safe places to buy a SIM card. The first days are often about rest, food, water, transport, and learning the nearby area. Power cuts, heavy rain, noise, and busy roads may affect plans, so keep basic backup arrangements. Local advice is very important, especially from a host, employer, school, hotel, or community contact. Learn a few polite greetings and ask before taking photographs or entering private places. The best first step is to make a small arrival plan with your address, transport, communication, emergency contacts, money options, and one trusted person who knows where you are.
