Environmental conditions in Niger result from the interaction between ecosystems, settlements, infrastructure, institutions and local resource use. Natural areas support pastoralism, farming, fishing, forest products and other ecosystem services, but drought, erosion, sand encroachment, wetland drying, fires, overgrazing, illegal hunting and resource extraction place pressure on them. Protected areas conserve species, habitats and ecological processes, although access may be restricted by security conditions and local management rules. Everyday surroundings depend on the quality and availability of water, sanitation, drainage, air, noise control, green space and safety. Responsibility is divided among communes, the Ministère de l'environnement, de l'hydraulique et de l'assainissement (MEHA), urban-planning bodies, water and electricity providers, and emergency authorities. The relevant authority, commune, provider or project determines practical access, costs and response times.
