Niger's earliest documented history is closely linked to Sahara climate changes. At Gobero in the Ténéré, hunter-fisher-gatherer communities lived between about 7700 and 6200 BCE, and the cemetery dates to approximately 7500 BCE. A drier interval followed from about 6200 to 5200 BCE. People returned between about 5200 and 2500 BCE, leaving shells, fish remains, wild cattle and evidence of emerging cattle herding. The evidence suggests population change rather than one uninterrupted local population. Rock paintings and engravings add local evidence, but their dates and interpretations vary by site. Pre-Islamic contacts crossed the Sahara through corridors linking Fezzan, the Hoggar, the Aïr and areas of present-day Niger. Archaeological and written evidence remains fragmentary, so Niger's ancient history cannot be reconstructed from Mediterranean sources alone. From the seventh to the eleventh century, Islam spread through trade, scholarly networks and political elites. Between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries, Kanem-Bornu influenced the Lake Chad region, Songhai was centred farther west around Gao, Hausa city-states shaped southern areas, and the Aïr formed a northern regional sphere. These were overlapping areas of influence, not modern national borders. Arabic manuscripts and Ajami texts, meaning local languages written with Arabic script, complement oral history, archaeology and other written sources. The absence of a written record does not mean that a society had no history. Oral traditions, local chronicles and material remains must be compared because each preserves different events, perspectives and gaps. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the Sultanate of Aïr became established in Agadez, which connected Saharan caravans with Sahelian markets. Tuareg communities also settled around earlier camps. Agadez preserves eleven historic quarters, mud-brick architecture, the Sultan's palace, the Grande Mosquée and its 27-metre mud-brick minaret. UNESCO records the Sultanate system as continuing, while the city's trading, cultural and craft links extend across more than five centuries. The Chronicles of Agadez, also known as Y Tarichi, are valuable for the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries. The surviving copies were transmitted by local elites to colonial officials in the early twentieth century, and political editing in favour of local elites is possible. Researchers therefore compare them with independent manuscripts, oral accounts, archaeology and administrative records. During the nineteenth century, Hausa and Sokoto, Bornu, Aïr and Tuareg networks connected different parts of the region. French conquest and military administration expanded from the 1890s. A military territory existed around 1900, and the Colonie du Niger became part of Afrique-Occidentale française on 1 July 1922. Colonial taxation, transport, administration and borders reshaped older regional connections, while resistance, violence and local negotiation influenced how colonial rule operated. Niger became a republic on 18 December 1958 and gained independence on 3 August 1960 under Hamani Diori. The contemporary period includes civilian one-party rule under Diori from 1960 to 1974, the military government of Seyni Kountché after the coup of 14 April 1974, and Ali Saibou's rule from 1987. The 1989 constitution restored a one-party system. Student protests and repression in 1990 contributed to the opening toward multiparty politics. The Conférence nationale souveraine met from 29 July to 3 November 1991, followed by multiparty elections and the Third Republic in 1993. Tuareg and Toubou conflicts during the 1990s led to a peace agreement on 24 April 1995 and further settlement in 1998. Ibrahim Baré Mainassara took power in a 1996 coup and was killed in 1999, followed by a military transition. Another Tuareg uprising occurred from 2007 to 2009, a constitutional crisis followed in 2009, and Salou Djibo led the 2010 coup and transition to a new constitution. Civilian governments governed from 2011 to 2021, when Niger experienced its first peaceful transfer of power. On 26 July 2023, the Conseil national pour la sauvegarde de la patrie, or CNSP, took power and suspended the constitution. The United Nations and ECOWAS described this as an unconstitutional change of power, while official national narratives presented it through sovereignty and refoundation. The Charte de la Refondation received constitutional rank on 26 March 2025 and established a 60-month period that may be extended or adjusted. In 2026, official state descriptions refer to the CNSP, a president, the Conseil Consultatif de la Refondation and other transition institutions. Regional history remains essential. The Aïr and Agadez, Ader and Zinder, the Niger River and Songhai areas, the southern Hausa regions, and Diffa and the Lake Chad basin have different historical connections and source traditions. Climate change affected mobility and settlement; Saharan and Sahelian corridors supported trade, Islam and writing; and colonial borders placed a modern national framework over older regional relationships. Historical research and heritage work involve the Institut de recherches en sciences humaines at Université Abdou Moumouni in Niamey, the university's archaeology, history, popular-traditions and manuscript work, the Musée National Boubou Hama, the cultural heritage directorate of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, UNESCO and state heritage inventories, and local sultanate and community actors. The research institute is publicly contactable and lists opening hours from Monday to Thursday, 08:00 to 17:00, and Friday, 08:00 to 13:00. The museum is generally open to the public. Manuscript access, archival work, excavations and work at protected sites may require institutional permission or a formal permit, and travel in northern or desert areas depends on security and logistics. Law 97-022 of 30 June 1997 and decree 97-407 of 10 November 1997 provide the framework for protecting, preserving and promoting cultural heritage. They support inventory work, authenticity protection, local consultation and the transfer of building and conservation knowledge; they do not create a general right to excavate or remove objects. No single public fee or centrally standardized processing time covers all historical work.
