Nicaragua does not have one public scheme that covers every personal, property and income risk. The INSS provides statutory social insurance through Integral, IVM-RP, Facultativo Integral and Facultativo IVM regimes. Integral coverage includes medical care and subsidies for illness, maternity and certain accidents after the applicable contribution conditions are met. Its beneficiaries can include children under 12 and pregnant spouses. IVM-RP covers old age, disability, death, work accidents, commuting accidents and occupational diseases, with medical and financial benefits. Employers generally report work accidents to the INSS within 48 hours. The facultative regimes provide selected protection without the full employer-based arrangement; facultative coverage does not include work accidents. Standard old-age pension access uses a threshold of age 60 and 750 paid contributions, subject to the applicable Social Security Law and regulations. The INSS schedule lists employer contributions for the Integral regime at 21.5% for employers with fewer than 50 workers and 22.5% for employers with more than 50 workers, with a 7% worker contribution. For IVM-RP, the listed employer rates are 15.5% and 16.5% according to workforce size, with a 5% worker contribution. The listed facultative rates are 22.25% for Facultativo Integral and 14% for Facultativo IVM. Contribution rates and their legal validity should be checked against the current INSS information and applicable resolutions before relying on them for payroll or planning. Private insurance operates under Ley No. 733, the Ley General de Seguros, Reaseguros y Fianzas. Authorized insurers, brokers, agents, adjusters and other intermediaries appear in SIBOIF registers. Available lines can include individual, collective and debtor life insurance; personal accident; health; occupational and pension-related insurance; annuities; fire; theft; motor vehicles; transport; maritime risks; agricultural risks; credit; title insurance; unemployment; civil liability; fidelity; assistance; microinsurance and fianzas. A fianza is a contractual guarantee that supports a specified obligation. Product availability must be checked in the current SIBOIF register and under the authorization for the relevant line of insurance. The insurer or intermediary should explain the insured interest, insured amount, policy term, premium, taxes, surcharges, exclusions, limits, deductible, beneficiary, renewal, cancellation and claim channel. The policy documents should show the applicable SIBOIF approval resolution. Keep the policy, receipts, endorsements, inventories, photographs and other evidence connected with the insured risk. A broker or agent must support the customer with explanations and claims handling, deliver the policy within three days after receipt, address risk changes and obtain written consent for a new contract, modification or rescission. Mandatory motor-vehicle third-party liability insurance applies to vehicles under the relevant traffic rules. Foreign-plated vehicles entering temporarily generally require cover valid for 30 days. In a mandatory motor claim, the injured third party can use the Certificado de Accidente issued through the competent traffic authorities. The claim deadline is generally 15 working days after the certificate when one person is injured and 30 working days when at least two people are injured. The insurer may arrange assessment by an adjuster and pay for repair, replacement or cash compensation according to the policy. It should not impose an unsupported deduction. For other claims, the general conditions of the policy set the deadline and required documents. Premiums should remain current, although mandatory policies can follow different rules. If the insurer rejects a written claim or does not respond, submit the dispute first to the insurer and complete that process. A later complaint to SIBOIF generally requires the insurer claim number, insurer details, claimant contact information, the reason for the complaint, evidence of the prior claim and written response or non-response, plus a power of attorney where someone acts on the claimant's behalf. The SIBOIF complaint deadline is 30 working days after the insurer process has been exhausted. A policy can be extended, renewed, modified, reinstated or ended through a written or electronic request with proof of receipt. The insurer's response for an extension, renewal, modification or reinstatement is generally due within 72 hours. A mismatch between the policy and the requested cover should be raised within 30 working days after receipt so that special conditions can be corrected. Cancellation, non-renewal, unpaid premiums and earned premiums depend on the policy and short-term cancellation terms. Private voluntary insurance does not replace INSS statutory protection. Informal mutual aid or savings arrangements also do not provide the same policy rights or SIBOIF regulatory protection.
Insurance in Nicaragua
Insurance in Nicaragua combines statutory social insurance through the Instituto Nicaragüense de Seguridad Social (INSS) with private contractual insurance supervised by the Superintendencia de Bancos y de Otras Instituciones Financieras (SIBOIF). The system covers risks such as illness, maternity, work accidents, old age, death, property damage, motor vehicles, liability and loss of income. The applicable protection depends on the regime, policy, insured amount, exclusions, deductible, premium and claim conditions.
Tip
Match each risk to the protection that actually responds to it: INSS participation, private insurance, mandatory vehicle liability cover or a combination. Treat authorization, exclusions, deductibles, payment status and claim deadlines as decision conditions, not fine print. Keep written proof of every policy, payment, request and insurer response so that a claim or complaint remains verifiable.
