School in Netherlands

In The Netherlands, primary school is called basisschool. Children learn basic subjects such as Dutch, mathematics, reading, writing, social development, and the natural and cultural world. After primary school, pupils move to secondary education, called voortgezet onderwijs. Secondary schools prepare pupils for vocational education, higher professional education, university, or combinations of these routes. The main pathways are VMBO, HAVO, and VWO. VMBO is more practically oriented, HAVO prepares mainly for HBO, and VWO provides a longer academic route that can lead towards university. Some schools use a bridge period before placing a pupil fully into a pathway. A pupil can sometimes move between pathways when results, development, and school advice support the change. Lessons normally include a broad general programme and later more specialised subjects. Schools may also offer support for language learning, learning difficulties, health needs, or social development. The move from primary to secondary school includes advice from the basisschool, discussions with the family, and choosing a suitable secondary school. The exact admission process can differ between schools and municipalities. Older pupils usually work towards a national school-leaving examination connected to their pathway. The diploma helps determine which next step is open, although additional conditions can apply. Schools in The Netherlands can differ in educational approach, faith or identity, size, and special programmes. A school that looks attractive on paper may still be a poor fit if travel, support, language, or classroom style does not suit the child. Start by understanding the child’s current level and support needs. Visit possible schools, ask how they guide transitions, and discuss choices with the current teacher and the child.
