Before travelling, check that your passport remains valid for at least six months beyond the planned stay. For a Visa on Arrival, it should also have at least three blank pages. Carry return or onward-travel proof, digital and paper copies of key documents, and the address of your first accommodation. A Holiday Visa may also require accommodation and financial evidence, while documents for children and families should be confirmed with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security (MHAISS) or the responsible Namibian representation. An electronic visa, called an e-visa, is requested online and provides status tracking; a Visa on Arrival is available only at currently approved ports. Visa-exempt ordinary-passport holders may receive a Holiday or Tourism stay for up to three months per calendar year, but country lists can change. Work, study or a longer stay normally requires the appropriate employment, student, temporary-residence or permanent-residence permit, and a tourist status or Visa on Arrival does not automatically change into one of these permits. The MHAISS Fact Sheet V4 dated 28 May 2025 lists fees of NAD 1,200 for applicants in its African category aged 12 or older, NAD 1,600 for non-African applicants, NAD 600 or 800 for children aged 6 to 11, and no fee for children under 6; verify the current fee before applying. A port of entry is an approved airport, land border or harbour where immigration and customs controls take place. At arrival, the usual sequence is Port Health where required, immigration, baggage collection, Namibian Revenue Agency (NamRA) customs and onward transport. Travellers arriving from a yellow-fever-risk area need a Yellow Fever Certificate and Port Health screening before immigration, and the relevant country list can change. An approved e-visa serves as the arrival form; its arrival section must be completed before the immigration officer signs it. Without an e-visa, complete the arrival form before reaching the counter but sign it only when instructed by the officer. Namibian citizens, valid permanent-residence-permit holders and people recorded as domiciled are exempt from the arrival form under the supplied national guidance. Declare cash and bearer negotiable instruments, goods or vehicles for import, goods for another person, items above the duty-free allowance, restricted or prohibited goods, controlled goods and temporary imports. Use the green channel only when no declaration is required and all goods remain within the allowance; use the red channel when uncertain. Failure to declare can lead to detention, seizure, penalties or criminal prosecution. The Southern African Customs Union (SACU) comprises Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia and South Africa, and customs allowances differ for SACU and non-SACU travellers. For non-SACU travellers who have been away for at least 48 hours, examples of allowances include 200 cigarettes, 20 cigars, 250 grams of tobacco, 2 litres of wine, 1 litre of other alcohol and personal goods worth up to NAD 5,000, subject to special rules and age limits. Hosea Kutako International Airport provides ATMs, currency exchange, NamPost, registered shuttles and taxis, car rentals, restaurants and tourism information, while services at other airports, land borders and Walvis Bay Harbour vary. The Namibian dollar and South African Rand are legal tender, so an initial combination of cash and card access reduces payment problems; foreign-exchange and customs limits are separate checks. Keep your passport, e-visa or permit, entry stamp, accommodation address, ticket and payment evidence together after arrival. Monitor the permitted stay and the conditions attached to it, and do not overstay or work or study without the required authorisation. Namibia has no evidenced nationwide arrival registration duty for short-term visitors and no single national newcomer welcome office. Visa and permit assistance is available through MHAISS headquarters and regional offices, while health and municipal support is organised regionally. The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MHSS) Master Health Facility List identifies hospitals, health centres and clinics, but access and service levels differ by region. The MHSS Emergency Operation Center helpline is 0800100100, and the Namibian Police emergency number is 10111. For mobile access, MTC SIM registration requires a valid passport or identity document, personal and residential address details, liveness detection and document capture; the registration currently has no separate fee, and a local number or data service follows successful verification.
Arrival in Namibia
Arrival in Namibia requires the right entry documents, a permitted visa or stay status, and a plan for the first accommodation and onward travel. At the port of entry, health screening where applicable, immigration, baggage collection and customs follow a defined order. After entry, keep proof of your status, monitor the permitted stay and arrange access to money, health care, emergency help and a local SIM.
Tip
Treat arrival in Namibia as a status and logistics checkpoint, not only as the end of a journey. The greatest avoidable risks are using the wrong entry permission, lacking required evidence, missing a customs declaration and losing track of the permitted stay. Prepare one accessible document set and a first-day plan covering transport, money, health care, emergencies and mobile access.
