Learning in Myanmar

Learning in Myanmar spans school education, occupational training, higher education, language courses and upskilling. Each pathway has different providers, entry conditions, fees, duration, assessment and recognition. Access and progression vary by location, current conditions, programme and institution.

Tip

Choose the learning pathway by the result you need: school completion, occupational skills, an academic qualification, language ability or updated work skills. Compare the provider, attendance conditions, fees, duration, assessment and certificate value before committing. Confirm that the programme is currently accessible in your location and that its outcome supports your intended next step.

Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship in Myanmar combines occupational learning with practical work, but it does not follow one unified nationwide dual system. Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) includes formal institution-based programmes, shorter skills courses and workplace learning. Recognition, duration, fees and progression depend on the provider, programme and assessment option.

School

Basic Education is Myanmar's regulated school system from Kindergarten (KG) through Grade 12. Grades 1–5 are Primary Education, Grades 6–9 are Middle School, and Grades 10–12 are High School; one institution may combine several stages. Government schools do not charge school, entrance or other fees, but access and attendance vary sharply with conflict, displacement, disasters, location and school type.

Languages

Language learning in Myanmar includes Myanmar, also called Burmese, English, ethnic languages and additional foreign languages. Myanmar is the main language of state education, English begins in primary school, and ethnic languages may support learning and local communication. Universities, public language institutions, private centres and international providers offer further courses and examinations.

Higher Education

Higher education in Myanmar is tertiary study at an authorized institution that leads to a recognized academic or tertiary qualification. Available institutions include universities, degree colleges, colleges and specialized institutes, with regular campus study and distance education among the established study modes. Admission, program length, language, fees and progression depend on the institution, program and official rules.

Continuing Education

Upskilling in Myanmar is provided through a fragmented mix of government programmes, employers, private institutions, universities, NGOs, ethnic organisations, monastic groups and community providers. Courses may update job skills, prepare people for work, support a return to learning or develop practical abilities through formal, non-formal or informal learning. Access, quality, fees, duration and certificate value vary by provider, occupation, region and current announcement.
