Employment in Myanmar

Dependent paid employment in Myanmar means paid work performed for an employer rather than independent business activity. It includes finding a job, agreeing terms, receiving wages, working under workplace rules, using leave and ending the employment relationship. Formal protections are strongest where a written contract, wage records and Social Security Board coverage apply; informal and casual work is widespread and may fall outside them.

Tip

Treat a job in Myanmar as a decision about documentation and protection, not only about the wage offered. A formally covered position with an approved contract, traceable pay and Social Security Board registration is generally safer when you need leave, medical, maternity, injury, unemployment or retirement protection; informal or casual work may be easier to access but carries greater proof and coverage risks. Check the employer, establishment type, contract, wage applicability and responsible Township office before accepting.
