Living in Mozambique

Mozambique lies in southeastern Africa on the Indian Ocean and has around 29.5 million people. Long coastlines, river deltas and vast savannas characterize the country; in the north and west, there are also mountainous areas. The climate ranges from tropical and humid in the north to drier in the south, with a distinct rainy season and hot temperatures. Many people live in simple houses made of bricks, mud or concrete, while in cities they also live in more densely built-up neighborhoods. Buses, bicycles and boats are important means of transport, while in rural areas agriculture and fishing shape everyday life. Maputo has a more urban character; in smaller towns, markets, neighborhood life and family life play a central role. Leisure time is often spent with family, listening to music or at the beach.
