School in Mauritius

School education in Mauritius is organised in stages, beginning with primary education and continuing through secondary education. Early-childhood provision comes before primary school but is organised separately. Mauritius has government schools and private schools, including many grant-aided secondary schools. The school type can affect admission procedures, facilities, teaching approach and additional costs. The Nine-Year Continuous Basic Education framework connects primary education with the early years of secondary education. It aims to give learners a broad foundation before they move toward more specialised subjects and qualifications. The Primary School Achievement Certificate is commonly called the PSAC. It marks the end of primary schooling and is connected with progression into secondary education. During secondary education, learners study a broad range of subjects before making more specialised choices. Qualifications commonly encountered include the National Certificate of Education, the School Certificate and the Higher School Certificate. English is central to formal schooling, while French is also widely taught and used. Mauritian Creole is important in everyday communication, and some schools teach ancestral or additional languages. Schools assess learners through classwork, tests, projects and examinations. Attendance, behaviour, homework and communication between families and schools also affect a child's progress. Academic secondary school is not the only possible route. Technical and vocational education can offer a more practical path for learners whose interests and strengths fit hands-on occupations. A good school choice depends on the child's needs, travel arrangements, available support and future route. A famous school is not automatically the best learning environment for every child.
