Living in Mauritania

Mauritania lies in northwestern Africa on the Atlantic, between Western Sahara, Algeria, Mali and Senegal; around 4.4 million people live there. Large parts of the country belong to the Sahara, while the south along the Senegal River is more fertile. The climate is predominantly hot and dry, with coastal winds moderating temperatures. In Nouakchott, more densely built-up neighborhoods, markets and long journeys shape everyday life; many people work in trade, services, fishing or mining. Outside the capital, livestock farming and agriculture are more important. Families live partly in permanent houses and partly in simpler accommodations; overland, people often travel by bus or off-road vehicle. The region and place of residence strongly determine what work, school, services and leisure look like.
