Language in Malta

Malta has two constitutional official languages. Maltese is the national language, while Maltese and English are official languages used in public services, education, courts, media and everyday participation. Maltese is central to national identity and culture, while English is widely used in business, tourism, science and international affairs.

Tip

Use Maltese or English according to the institution and purpose, and keep the language consistent in formal dealings. English is often practical for international, business and scientific matters, while Maltese is essential for full access to national, cultural and court-related contexts. Do not assume that a dialect, migrant language or sign-language service has the same formal reach as Maltese or English.
