History in Mali

Mali's past reaches from early communities and regional kingdoms to the Ghana, Mali and Songhai empires. These states controlled parts of West African trade routes and connected the Sahel with North Africa. Gold, salt, agriculture and river transport supported cities and political power, while Islam became influential in government, education and commerce without replacing all local religious practices. The Mali Empire reached its greatest influence in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Timbuktu and Djenné developed as centers of trade, learning and religious scholarship. The Songhai Empire later expanded around Gao and Timbuktu before falling at the end of the sixteenth century after the Moroccan invasion. Other political communities, including the Bambara state centered at Ségou, shaped the region in later centuries. France imposed colonial rule over the territory that became French Sudan. Colonial administration changed borders, taxation, labor systems, education and political authority. Mali became independent in 1960. The republic then experienced military and civilian governments, droughts, economic pressures, decentralization efforts and conflicts involving northern regions and armed groups. Since 2012, insecurity and international military involvement have strongly affected political life and relations between communities and the state. Historical interpretation requires attention to written sources, oral traditions, archaeology, manuscripts and the perspectives of different communities. The same empire, migration or colonial policy can have different meanings depending on the region and the group concerned. Mali's historical heritage therefore includes both celebrated centers of scholarship and trade and the difficult legacies of slavery, colonial rule, political exclusion and conflict.
