Health in Mali

Mali has a formal, community-based and tiered health system covering prevention, examinations, treatment, medicines, maternity care, emergencies and follow-up. Access is available nationally but varies sharply by region and facility because insecurity, displacement, difficult roads, fuel problems, staff shortages and stock-outs can interrupt care. Routine care usually starts at the nearest community health centre, with referral to higher-level facilities when the case requires more equipment or specialist staff.

Tip

Treat healthcare access in Mali as a local availability decision, not as a uniform national service. Use a functioning CSCOM for routine care, confirm referral and medicine availability before travelling farther, and plan separately for emergencies, malaria prevention, pregnancy, mental health support and treatment costs.
