Friendship in Mali

People usually recognize friendship when an acquaintance becomes a voluntary, recurring and mutual personal connection. In Bamanankan, teri means friend and teriya means friendship; terikɛ and terimuso refer to a male and female friend. Mali has 13 national languages and more than 50 Indigenous languages, so these terms are not universal across the country. French terms such as ami, amie and amitié are also used. Friendships form through self-choice or peer invitation rather than an application or legal eligibility test. Common settings include neighbourhoods, schools, workplaces, sports, cultural activities, local peer groups, community clubs, mentors, peer education and messaging or social-media groups. A grin is an informal friendship or youth group that meets regularly at a familiar place for tea, music, cards, discussion and shared leisure. Grins are especially documented in urban and peri-urban areas. A study of 11 grins in Kounda recorded 7 to 18 members aged 18 to 25 per group, but these historical findings are not national figures. Rural communities may have functional equivalents without one uniform national structure. Friendship can involve regular meetings, conversation, shared activities, emotional support, stress relief, behaviour correction, neighbourhood assistance and economic help. Grin norms described in local research include equality, respect, free expression and the ability to disagree. Membership has been associated with greater trustworthiness in one study, but that finding does not prove that group membership causes the difference. Access and participation vary with place, age, gender, social position and security conditions. Evidence about grins concerns young men especially, while community clubs, mentors and peer groups for girls and women are also documented; equal access across Mali has not been established. Digital contact can help maintain friendships across distance when people have access to devices, networks and data. In a 2020 cross-sectional study covering Bamako and 12 other locations, WhatsApp accounted for 29.69 percent, Facebook for 26.01 percent and YouTube for 16.74 percent of recorded social-media use. These figures are a study snapshot, not a current national share. Migration or marriage can reduce or end participation in a grin, while calls, messages, visits and practical help can preserve a friendship. Farewell gatherings may include photographs, tea, cigarettes, gifts or money. Informal costs vary and can include food, tea, mobile data, transport and group contributions. Meetings may occur regularly or daily in some local settings, with no national timetable or fee. Disagreements are usually handled through conversation, group norms or mediation by social, community or customary actors. Mali has no friendship-specific formal mediation procedure and no enforceable rule requiring reconciliation or continued contact. Conflict or displacement can strengthen group support in some settings, but it can also increase inward-looking behaviour, exclusion and loss of trust; reports of violence or rivalry are local findings and should not be generalized. A sports club, cultural club or other association can provide repeated peer contact, but its legal purpose is different from friendship. Under the administrative framework associated with the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, forming an association may involve two copies of a founding declaration, minutes and statutes, signed by three officers. The statutory cost is zero, while processing time varies because of administrative review or investigation. Depending on the applicable procedure, prior authorization or a declaration may be required, and legal capacity depends on compliance with the law. UNICEF-supported community clubs, mentors, peer education and informal youth groups are project-, age-, location- and partner-dependent; they do not provide general national access or a standard cost and timetable. Friendship should be distinguished from sanankuya, sometimes described as a socially recognized joking or alliance relationship between certain kin or communities, as well as from family, kinship and political or family associations. Romantic relationships, shared housing and purely occasional acquaintance belong to different relationship categories. No national entitlement, exit payment or fixed notice period applies when a friendship ends.
