Disasters in Mali

Disasters in Mali are major emergencies that seriously threaten people, the environment or essential infrastructure. Flooding is the most prominent hazard, especially in the Niger, Bani and Senegal basins, the Inner Delta and Bamako; drought causes water, crop and livestock losses. Mali has national warning, response and assistance structures, but access, local capacity and funding vary by area.

Tip

Treat disaster preparation in Mali as a local risk-management task rather than relying on a nationwide system or automatic assistance. Prioritize flood preparation near rivers, drainage corridors and low-lying areas, and adapt the plan to drought, storms, building risks or bushfires where those hazards affect your area. Use more than one warning channel and prepare for delays in evacuation, rescue, cash, shelter and rebuilding support.
