Arrival in Malaysia

Most international visitors enter Malaysia through a major airport, while some arrive by land or sea from nearby countries. The basic steps are document checks, baggage collection, customs, and onward travel. At immigration, present your passport and any required permission for your nationality and purpose of travel. Keep your accommodation address and return or onward travel details available, because officers may ask simple questions about your stay. After collecting luggage, follow the customs instructions and declare restricted or taxable goods when required. Do not carry medicines, food, plants, or other controlled items without checking whether they are allowed. Malaysia uses the ringgit, often written as RM or MYR. Cards and electronic payments are common in cities, but cash is still useful for small shops, transport, markets, and places with weak signal. For the first trip from an airport, use an official taxi counter, a licensed airport transfer, public transport, or a trusted e-hailing service. Confirm the destination, vehicle details, and expected route before leaving. A Malaysian address may include a building name, block, floor, unit number, street, neighbourhood, postcode, state, and country. Save the address in writing and show it to a driver if pronunciation is difficult. The weather can be hot, humid, and rainy, so keep water, light clothing, and important medicines in your hand luggage. Be patient with queues and speak politely, especially at immigration, customs, and transport counters.
