Study in Malawi

Malawi’s higher education system includes the University of Malawi (UNIMA), Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), Mzuzu University (MZUNI), Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) and Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS). It also includes other public colleges, private universities and higher education institutions, including providers of Open Distance and e-Learning. Programme availability, admission rules, academic calendars and student services differ by institution. The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) registers institutions and programmes, sets standards, supports the Higher Education Qualifications Framework and evaluates foreign qualifications. An institution’s registration does not by itself prove that every programme is accredited. Check the current NCHE register for both the institution and the programme before paying fees or enrolling. Accreditation is periodic, and qualifications issued after a non-accreditation decision may not be recognised. The Higher Education Qualifications Framework (HEQF) places qualifications at national levels. A certificate is generally Level 5 with 120 credits, a diploma Level 6 with 240 credits, a bachelor’s degree Level 7 with 480 credits, an honours degree Level 8 with 600 credits, postgraduate certificates and diplomas and master’s degrees at Level 9, and a PhD at Level 10. These national credits are not automatically equivalent to European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System credits. Actual duration depends on the programme; many bachelor’s programmes take about four years, while selected professional degrees take about five years. Common admission evidence includes the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE), an IGCSE or comparable O-Level qualification, certificates or result slips and proof of identity. A common Public University Selection baseline is at least six credits including English, but programmes may require particular subjects and grades. A-Level qualifications and recognised equivalents may also qualify. Mature entry can require a secondary qualification and a related higher certificate or diploma under the institution’s rules. International applicants normally apply directly to the institution and must satisfy its nationality, qualification and English-language requirements. Public University Selection (PUS) is the central application process for eligible generic applicants seeking public university places. The current process uses a programme eligibility filter and permits up to six choices. Applicants generally provide a National ID, passport photograph, certificate or result slip and proof of the application fee. Selection does not guarantee an automatic seat entitlement. Economic fee-paying places, weekend study, mature entry, postgraduate study and international admission follow different institutional conditions. Study may be full-time and residential, weekend-based or delivered through Open Distance and e-Learning (ODeL). ODeL is predominantly online, although an institution may require campus sessions for laboratories, examinations or other activities. Fees vary by institution, programme, study category, mode, residence and nationality. Published examples for 2025/26 included UNIMA economic fees of K2,500,000 per year for Malawian students, USD5,500 for SADC students and USD8,000 for non-SADC students; MUST published K2,850,000 per year for Malawian economic fee-paying students and K360,000 for residence. Institutions announced fee adjustments for 2026/27, so current fees must be checked directly. Application fees, accommodation, meals, transport, materials, insurance and technology can add to the total cost. The Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) supports eligible needy Malawian students in accredited institutions and programmes through tuition loans, upkeep loans, ODeL loans and grants. Applications commonly require a National ID, admission evidence, guardian IDs and evidence of financial need. Screening involves the institution, followed by provisional publication, vetting, a loan contract and disbursement. Grants may become available from the second year when academic performance and conduct meet the applicable conditions. Loans must be repaid. Students normally complete institutional registration, teaching, practical or laboratory work, fieldwork where required, continuous assessment and examinations. Postgraduate programmes may require research and a dissertation. The institution sets progression and graduation requirements and awards the qualification after successful assessment. Support such as accommodation, health services, social support, student councils, sport and religious activities varies by institution. After graduation, possible next steps include postgraduate study, a regulated professional qualification or employment. NCHE provides verification or evaluation for foreign qualifications.
