Preschool education is provided through детска градинка (kindergarten) and центар за ран детски развој (early childhood development centres). It supports early learning and development but is regulated separately from the nine-year compulsory school system. A generally compulsory preschool year is a policy goal rather than an established nationwide requirement. Primary education lasts nine years, from grades 1 to 9, usually for children aged about 6 to 15. Grades 1 to 3, 4 to 6 and 7 to 9 form the main learning periods. Secondary education normally follows primary school and lasts two, three or four years depending on the program.
School in Macedonia
School education in North Macedonia covers preschool preparation, nine years of primary education and several forms of secondary education. Primary and public secondary education are compulsory and free of charge. Children usually enter primary school at about age six, while secondary students choose between gymnasium, vocational, artistic and specialized programs.
Tip
Choose the school pathway according to the child’s current stage, teaching language, learning needs and likely next step. For primary school, confirm the responsible local school; for secondary school, compare programs, places and admission criteria rather than choosing by name alone. Check school-level differences in support, transport, meals, extended care and additional costs before enrolling.
