History in Laos

The history of Laos reflects the development of early societies, regional kingdoms, French colonial rule, war and the establishment of the Lao People's Democratic Republic in 1975. The kingdom of Lan Xang connected much of present-day Laos politically and culturally for several centuries. Modern Laos was shaped strongly by the conflicts of the First Indochina War, the Vietnam War and the subsequent revolutionary period.

Tip

Use Laos's history as a timeline of political, cultural and military change rather than as a single uninterrupted national story. For any explanation, study task or local discussion, identify the period, compare the available perspectives and separate established evidence from unresolved interpretation.
