School in Kenya

Kenya's school system includes pre-primary education and successive stages of basic education. Learners normally move from foundational learning into primary, junior, and senior levels before entering further education, training, or work. Competency-based learning is an important part of the system and is often associated with the term CBC. It focuses on applying knowledge, building skills, developing values, and showing progress through varied activities. Schools may be public or private. They can also differ in day or boarding arrangements, religious connection, facilities, teaching approach, and support for learners with disabilities. The school year is divided into terms. Daily learning commonly includes lessons, assignments, practical activities, assessment, sports, clubs, and responsibilities within the school community. English and Kiswahili have central roles in schooling, while other languages may support early learning or local communication. Language use can differ by school stage, subject, and community. Assessment helps teachers and families understand a learner's progress. It may include class activities, projects, practical work, tests, teacher observations, and national assessment at important transition points. School participation involves more than tuition. Families may need to plan for uniforms, learning materials, meals, transport, activities, devices, or boarding needs, depending on the school. A suitable school should be safe, accessible, respectful, and able to support the learner's needs. Challenges can include distance, household costs, overcrowding, language barriers, disability access, and unequal learning resources.
